Cold Process Soap Making Kit.

PLEASE READ: This kit is NOT the same thing as melt & pour soap making. Please read this entire listing to ensure you know exactly what you are buying.

Cold process soap making is the process of adding carefully measured oils, water and caustic lye together to create a naturally made bar soap. This kit includes all the ingredients you will need to make approximately 35 (4oz) bars of handmade soap.

Please note that you will need access to a digital kitchen scale to weigh out the ingredients – you cannot use measuring cups. You will also need rubber gloves, protective eye wear (cheap goggles from the dollar store work great), a stainless steel pot (you cannot use aluminum or any type with a non-stick surface) a metal whisk and a cooking thermometer. Once you use the pot and the whisk for soap making, they shouldn’t be used again for food use. But that is okay, because once you get the hang of making your own soap you will need them over and over again to make more wonderful creations! An optional item to consider purchasing is a hand-held stick blender but this item is not required, it just makes it a whole lot easier during the stirring process.

Time commit required for making cold process soap: For your first batch of soap, plan from start to finish to spend about 2 hours tops (most likely less but plan for 2 hours). This kit is NOT designed for children because of the use of sodium hydroxide, which is a caustic ingredient that is required to make bar soap. You cannot make this type of soap without using lye. We sell a 99.5% pure sodium hydroxide, and when properly made, your finished bar soap will be mild and skin loving because the lye undergoes a chemical change during the soap making process.

Once you have made your first batch of soap, it will need to sit wrapped in a blanket for 24 hours. After that time, you will remove the bars from the mold, slice the bars to the weight desired – and allow them air dry for THREE WEEKS before they should be used. During this process, they can sit anywhere in your house, as long as they are not in the direct sunlight – and air is able to naturally move around the bars (wire racks work well but are not required as you can simply turn the bar over every few days). The longer the bars sit, the harder they become and last longer in the shower. During this period of time they are also becoming more mild, quality bars of soap. We mention this step because if you are planning on making soap for the holiday season, this will need to be factored in.
