In an ongoing effort to offer naturally derived preservatives that are safe and yet effective, we have now added GSB (also trade named Neo-Defend) to our lineup. This preservative is approved for certified organic cosmetics by Ecocert and adheres to COSMOS standards.
This GSB Preservative is considered “broad spectrum,” meaning it will help protect your finished product from bacteria, yeast and fungi growth. You may use this preservative as your sole option or use in combination with another preservative to help extend the shelf life. Derived from non-gmo corn, and food grade sodium benzoate, this powdered preservative is a snap to add to water soluble formulations. Simply add to your water phase, directly after heating and removing it from the stove top – no worries about having to wait until it comes down in temperature, as long as it’s under 150 (f).
Use at a ratio of 0.5% to 2% of the water content of your formulation. Test the pH of your finished product which should be in the 3-7 range in order for this preservative to be effective.
GSB also brings skin conditioning and toning benefits to a recipe making it a dual purposed addition.
CAUTION: Avoid using this preservative in formulations that contain either ascorbic acid or citric acid. There is evidence that a chemical bond between the ingredients in GSB and these two common acids can create a substance called benzene, which should be avoided in skin care. Note: If your formulation contains only trace amounts of either of these acids, you are most likely okay.
This product is suitable for vegans. It contains no animal products, nor has it come into contact with animal derived ingredients during the manufacturing process. Not tested on animals.
