Description
Silver Citrate is a water-soluble natural antimicrobial preservative. Its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity works by penetrating and destroying the cellular walls that make up bacteria. It can be used as a stand-alone preservative, or in combination with others. We’ve tested it with our leuicidal as well as our linatural, and its compatible with both.
We need to remember that in highly aquatic formulations, it is this side of the recipe that is generally prone to mold and bacteria growth. Using silver citrate inside these types of recipes ensures a strong preservative system, since it has the ability to stay aquatic, or not migrate into the oil side of a formation.
Due to its ability to fight bacteria, many formulators use this in deodorant formulations as it has the ability to prevent the formation of body odor.
Use in an environment that holds a pH of 7 or below. Use at a ratio of 0.1 to 0.3%.
Manufacturer states it may not be compatible with ingredients such as: HEC and other cellulose derived thickening agents, as well as some starches, and cationic systems. Your own testing would need to be performed if your recipe holds these types of ingredients.
Silver Citrate is light sensitive. Store in non-see through or light-resistant containers: this goes for both the raw product as well as your finished formulation.
